Rabbit in Madiba’s statue to be removed

2014-01-21 00:00

THE little rabbit cast in the right ear of the giant statue of former president Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings has caused consternation and will soon be removed.

Sister paper Beeld has learned that the Department of Arts and Culture had sent a letter to the two Pretoria sculptors, Ruhan Janse van Vuuren and André Prinsloo, ordering them to remove the rabbit as soon as possible.

They must also make a formal apology to the Mandela family.

Beeld last week reported that the sculptors had decided to add the rabbit to the statue after the department had told them they may not add their signatures at the bottom of one of the pant legs.

Prinsloo said he and Janse van Vuuren had decided to leave a small stamp of their work and that the rabbit symbolised the speed with which they had to mould and cast the giant statue. Prinsloo had emphasised that there was no deeper meaning behind the rabbit.

Since then the department had ordered Janse van Vuuren and Prinsloo not to talk to the media.

They did not think the tiny rabbit, which can only be seen through binoculars or a strong zoom lens by a person looking for it, would be discovered so soon.

Spokesperson for the Department of Arts and Culture Mack Lewele did not respond to several messages yesterday.
