Rabies: Stray dog tests positive after biting hilton woman

2010-02-09 00:00

A STERN warning has been issued for KwaZulu-Natal citizens to stay away from stray dogs, after a Hilton woman was bitten by a dog that tested positive for rabies.

Sources who spoke to The Witness on condition of anonymity, said the woman picked up the stray dog, believed to be a greyhound, and was driving with it in her car to drop it off at the local SPCA branch, when it bit her.

The Witness understands that the dog has been euthanased.

Johan de Lange of the local veterinary services warned that people should not approach stray dogs as they may have rabies.

De Lange announced that a rigorous vaccination drive will resume from the top end of Sweetwaters tomorrow and will take in parts of Hilton. The veterinary services will vaccinate dogs in the Cedara area next week, said De Lange.

KZN rabies project manager Kevin le Roux urged dog owners to heed the dog vaccination call.

For free vaccinations, owners can take their dogs to the state veterinary services on certain days, he said.
