Race to place SA’s MTB men in world’s top 13

2012-03-17 00:00

THE third and final event of the Momentum Health XCO Internationals raised the bar on the international racing front to a level not seen at the first two events.

Coming one week before the RockyRoads UCI MTB World Cup on the same course at the Cascades MTB Park meant that every top team competing in the World Cup was out to test the course, their rivals and their own form.

Swiss rider Nino Schurter edged home six seconds ahead of South African Olympian Burry Stander to take the win. Florian Vogel (SUI) claimed third.

Cecile Ravenel (GT Skoda) made it two in a row as she claimed the honours in the Elite Women’s race ahead of Great Britain’s Annie Last, with Natahalie Schneitter (SUI) taking third place.

Samantha Sanders was the highest placed SA rider in tenth.

With riders earning UCI points in the three Momentum Health XCO Internationals, held in KwaZulu-Natal preceding the World Cup, our local riders are starting to climb the rankings and move South Africa closer to final qualification for the 2012 London Olympics.

The race to place in the top 13 for men is within South Africa’s grasp. If we rank 13th or better, South Africa would qualify to send two male riders to London.

Currently SA’s men are ranked 14th, a mere 16 points off Japan in the coveted 13th place.

The ranking of a nation is determined by the sum of a country’s top three ranked riders points, calculated from May 23, 2010, to May 22, 2011, and then May 23, 2011 to May 22, 2012.

As it stands, our top three ranked riders as per the UCI 28th February listing are Burry Stander, Philip Buys and Rourke Croeser.
