Radio: New KZN Gospel station

KWA-ZULU NATAL gospel music lovers are in for a treat next year with the launch of a new gospel radio station.

One Gospel KNI FM is part of the three commercial station that were awarded a licence by The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) recently.

The station, which will be based in Durban, is expected to start broadcasting in June under the leadership of DSTV’s gospel channel One Gospel’s House of Prayer host Reverend Abraham Sibiya.

“When we applied for the license in 2009 we had this vision of uplifting people’s spirits through gospel music. The fact that we trumped various applications to secure this license shows that there is a need for a station such as this in the province.

“People should expect 24 hours of fresh sounds, news, sports and weather, as well as interesting interviews and programming,” said Sibiya.

Other radio stations that got the green light from the broadcast authority include Cape Town Radio and Gauteng’s Richtrau.

The stations were part of 41 applications received countrywide.

Icasa councilor Fungai Sibanda said this process grants previously disadvantaged individuals an opportunity to participate meaningfully in the sector.

“These broadcasting services play a crucial role in strengthening social cohesion and giving a voice to various sections of the population …”
