Raid: Liquor outlets closed down

2012-09-03 00:00

FIFTEEN liquor outlets in Pietermaritzburg and Hilton have been ordered to close down and were issued with fines of up to R1 500 in a blitz which ended over the weekend.

“The outlets were closed down and their owners fined because they did not adhere to the conditions of the liquor licences issued for their businesses,” said KZN Liquor Authority CEO Stella Khumalo. “Most of the contraventions involved allowing off-site consumption, where licensees sold liquor to people who then drank it outside the premises of the outlet, when the outlet is licensed for on-site consumption only.” She said other contraventions included failure to produce licences and operating beyond the times stipulated on the licences.

A total of 35 outlets were raided in an operation that began in Fallan Park, outside Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday and ended in Howick on Saturday. They included distributors, manufacturers, retailers, taverns, restaurants and bottle stores.
