Rain puts Inland 3-dayer on hold

2012-11-09 00:00

NOT surprisingly, yesterday’s first day of the CSA Provincial Three-day Competition match between KZN Inland and South Western Districts at the Maritzburg Oval did not see a ball being bowled.

And the rainy weather has not helped the chances of play beginning today, as sunshine was needed on day one if there is to be a chance that the soggy outfield will have dried sufficiently for play to begin at all on day two.

Today’s forecast suggests a cloudy day with a 20% chance of rain, so there is still a slim chance that play might get underway.

Should it not, though, the forecast suggests that there will be some cricket tomorrow, the final day, and then it becomes a lottery — a manufactured result through imaginative declarations the remaining option.

Without any cricket in the match the sides are guaranteed five log points each.

The point, of course, is to get on the park with bat and ball — and both teams are sick of sitting in the pavilion — but a contrived result will leave nothing, but a sour taste in the loser’s mouth and point-less into the bargain.

Fortunately Sunday’s 50-over match should be a genuine contest between two willing sides, as the forecast suggests a sunny day with no chance of rain.
