Rain spoils schools’ night league final

2012-02-16 00:00

DRIZZLE put a real dampener on the final of the Sunfoil Schools’ Night League last evening at the Oval.

Maritzburg College and Hilton contested the final after ending the league, both with 14 points.

Hilton after winning the toss asked College to take first knock, with every possibility that the Duckworth/Lewis formula would be used.

After the first 10 overs College were 38 for one, advancing the rate to just over four an over at the halfway mark.

After 20 overs the score was 89 for one although they lost their second wicket in the 21st over.

Gareth Orr was middling the ball and looking impressive. When the umpires took the players off the field after 22 overs, with the drizzle getting heavier, College were on 96 for two and Orr, undefeated on 55 off 56 balls.

After waiting for an hour and then taking the supper break, the drizzle had increased and the match was unfortunately called off.

Neither school could agree on a suitable date for a replay.

Hilton have their half term this weekend and after one day next week leave for St Albans to play in the Independent Schools festival. College have one more match this weekend.

It was decided by the coaches and umpires that this year the trophy would be shared by both teams.
