Rain the winner at a soggy Maritzburg Oval

2009-11-16 00:00

THE KZN Dolphins’ hopes of a first four-day win in almost two seasons were washed away by frustrating drizzle throughout the weekend at the Oval.

The draw was always the most likely result as soon as Friday and Saturday’s play was cut short by a combination of bad light and rain.

Graham Ford, who cut an increasingly irritated figure as the match wound to its predictable end, can at least reflect on a solid showing against one of the country’s more consistent outfits.

The Dolphins certainly had the Eagles on the ropes at various stages in this match, but were left with only a moral victory.

Asked whether or not they had been tempted to declare straight away on Saturday, Ford explained that it would have been pointless.

“The outfield was quite damp so our swing bowlers wouldn’t have had much to work with when the ball got wet.”

Certainly, Johan Louw and Quinton Friend darted the ball about when the Dolphins innings finally ended, but a double collapse from the Eagles was most unlikely.

After man of the match Ahmed Amla had marked his hundredth first-class game with a fine century (134), Dean Elgar provided the only real source of interest yesterday as he raced against the weather to reach his eighth ton at this level.

By lunch, the match was a procession, and Amla had time to winkle out Boeta Dippenaar to put a cherry on a fine few days.

The Dolphins will gladly welcome back Loots Bosman and Yusuf Abdulla for this weekend’s game against the Cobras at Kingsmead.
