Rain washes out play

2010-01-19 00:00

IT was a case of déjà vu on the Maritzburg Oval on Sunday evening as Maritzburg College and St Charles started a 20/20 match to launch the Sunfoil Schools Night League.

During the first match of the night league in 2008, it was Westville who were batting first against College and rain caused the game to be abandoned in the 33rd over of the 45-over game when Westville had reached 177 for one. On Sunday evening, the match was abandoned after 11 overs, as drizzle made conditions underfoot very slippery. In 2008, rain upset the matches for the first three weeks where not a ball was bowled and the whole competition was abandoned.

KZN Inland cricket and Sunfoil will be hoping, as will the players, that this will not be the case and the league will get under way this year without the weather causing too much disruption.

For the record , Jarryd Walsh, newly appointed captain of Maritzburg College, was on 46 scored off 43 balls and Kewan Harries was on 15 scored off 23 balls, as the College total had reached 80 for 0. The wet ball was also difficult to control by the St Charles bowlers who gave away a fair number of extras.

This evening, the match will be repeated, as Sunfoil had organised a trophy and awards for the launch and thus St Charles will be playing Maritzburg College in the 20/20 challenge again. This will begin at 6 pm and hopefully will not again be interrupted. As these appear to be the two top sides in the province this year, it is hoped that there will be a good crowd present again.

The first of the matches in the night league will be tomorrow when Maritzburg College play Westville. The scheduled game for this afternoon between St Charles and the Presidents XI, a side selected from the smaller schools in the Inland region, is rescheduled for February 8.

So, the next five weeks sees three matches every week in the Sunfoil School’s Night League. Tomorrow the first match will be between Maritzburg College and Westville and on Thursday between Michaelhouse and Glenwood.

The four scheduled school games on Saturday were all cancelled due to early morning drizzle .
