Ramela’s unbeaten double ton gives Cobras the edge

2015-03-20 00:00

A CAREER-BEST undefeated 202 from Omphile Ramela put the Cape Cobras in pole position in their Sunfoil Series match against the Titans at Willowmoore Park in Benoni yesterday.

The batsman’s innings was a lesson in concentration to all, having taken up residence at the crease for 605 minutes. During this time he had faced 403 balls, which included 27 fours and two sixes deposited onto the banks.

Earlier, the hosts had bowled out their guests for 484 and, with the shadows lengthening across the park, the umpires pulled the stumps with the Titans on 21 for one needing another 314 runs just to avoid the follow-on.

Taking up the challenge when play resumes will be Dean Elgar and the home side’s captain, Henry Davids, on nine and four respectively.

The visitors from the Cape commenced play on the second day on 278 for two with Ramela on 123 and Dane Vilas on 10.

Five overs into the day’s play Vilas (13) was found wanting, edging an Ethy Mbhalati delivery to the ’keeper Mangaliso Mosehle.

Vilas’s departure brought Stiaan van Zyl — retired hurt on the first day, feeling under the weather — back to the wicket, and he continued in the same vein from where he left off before leaving the field (24 off 30-balls), racing to his 31st first-class half-century off 52 deliveries.

Mbhalati initiated the breakthrough, as Van Zyl (73 off 97-balls, which included 12 boundaries) misjudged a slower delivery, only to find the edge, which Mosehle had no trouble in pouching.

But together with Ramela he had contributed 79 runs for the fourth wicket. However, 30 minutes prior to the tea interval, it all went horribly wrong when the Cobras lost four wickets for a paltry six runs in the space of 14 balls.

Justin Kemp was castled by Rowan Richards, Robbie Peterson caught behind by Mosehle off Richards, Rory Kleinveldt bowled by Roelof van der Merwe and the Richards/Mosehle combination combined once again to snuff out the challenge of Mthokozisi Shezi.

Richards proved to be the pick of the home side’s attack, finishing with figures of 5-114, his ninth five wicket haul in 54 first-class matches.

Cobras 484 (Ramela 202*, Puttick 74, Van Zyl 73; Richards 5-114)
