Rampant Inland storm to victory

2011-02-28 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Inland cricket team fashioned a thrilling five-wicket victory over South Western Districts with just four balls remaining in the Provincial Challenge 40-over match at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Inland bounced back superbly from their six-wicket defeat at the hands of SWD in the three-dayer on Saturday.

Yesterday, South Western Districts made 275 for eight in their 40 overs to which Inland replied with 276 for five after 39.2 overs.

Glen Addicott hit a brilliant 105 off just 75 balls with three fours and five superb sixes, while wicketkeeper/batsman Tim Drummond also batted with style to score an unbeaten 63 off 60 with four fours and some outstanding running between the wickets with captain Kyle Nipper.

Yet it had all seemed so unlikely when SWD got off to a storming start thanks to captain Ross McMillan’s whirlwind 26 off 16 and a top-class 78 from Warriors batsman Burton de Wett, who stroked four fours and a six off 81 balls. William Hantam’s unbeaten 83 and a swashbuckling 36 in no time from Bevan Louw added to the carnage. In this context, Inland first-change seamer Darryn Mortimer’s eight overs for 25 runs was priceless. Next up for Inland is Eastern Province in Port Elizabeth from Thursday to Sunday, while Coastal have a bye.
