Rape suspect drops bail bid

2013-07-31 00:00

IN a surprise move yesterday, the man suspected of being the Tongaat serial killer decided against applying for bail as he “feared for his life”.

A large crowd protested outside the Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday demanding that the suspect (36), who is accused of raping and murdering three women whose bodies were found in sugar cane fields near the town of Tongaat, be denied bail.

The accused’s defence team announced that he was expected to apply for bail, but had decided to abandon his application because he feared for his life.

Prosecutor advocate Sagra Subroyen said the state might soon add a fourth count of murder.

“The investigations linking the suspect to another count of murder are pending this week. We are still waiting for some technical evidence such as DNA results and such,” said Subroyen.

The case was postponed to August 29.

Ntando Hlatshwayo, a daughter of one of the victims, was among protesters outside court, wearing a T-shirt showing a picture of her late mother, Philisiwe Hlatshwayo.
