Rates for schools?

2010-01-22 00:00

NOW that eThekwini Municipality has announced that private schools are regarded as newly rateable, will the Msunduzi Municipality apply the same system?

Megs Clinton-Parker of Msunduzi’s rates department says it is up to each municipality to create its own categories and policies.

“We will be dealing with the matter together with all previously exempt properties shortly. All of these properties had a 100% rebate for this year as part of a four-year phase-in …” she said.

Clinton-Parker’s response comes in the wake of a statement recently released by eThekwini Municipality’s communications unit.

The statement says that before 2008, private schools enjoyed rates exemptions, but this has now fallen away and they will be categorised as business and commercial entities from now on.

Rates are phased in over a four-year period. The statement continues: “A 100% rebate was granted in the 2008/2009 year and a 87,5% rebate was granted in the 2009/2010 year. The schools would receive a 50% rebate in the next financial year.”

Schools falling under eThekwini Municipality which need more clarity are urged to contact the municipality.
