Rates protest march in Kokstad called off after last-minute agreement

2013-06-19 00:00

A RATES protest march that was to take place in Kokstad today was called off at the last minute late yesterday, after the warring parties reached an agreement.

Ratepayers were up in arms over a 17% rates increase for businesses and residents and a 13% increase for farmers.

The Kokstad Chamber of Business, which was co-ordinating the march, was contacted by the municipality requesting a meeting that took place late in the afternoon. Cathy Robinson of the Chamber said an agreement had been reached — there were changes to the tariff — so they had agreed to call off today’s march.

Greater Kokstad municipal manager Felix Nxumalo said he could not publicly discuss details of the agreement at this stage, as according to protocol, the matter had to first go before a full council sitting. He said the meeting will take place shortly as the budget has to be passed before the end of June. Robinson said they had a very good meeting. “The chamber, farmers and ratepayers of the area are grateful and appreciative that the municipality has considered our views. There will be no protest march in the town today,” she said.
