Ratings: Film board in talks with broadcasters

2012-07-30 00:00

THE Film and Publications Board (FPB) has revealed that it has begun talks with South Africa’s broadcasters to create a level playing field when it comes to the classification of films and television shows screened on television in South Africa.

At present the FPB has no say in the ratings given by public and private broadcasting companies in the country.

Mlimandlela Ndamase, head of communication at the FPB, said that during consultation on proposed new classification guidelines, the issues of television ratings had been raised.

“Concerns were raised about the suitability of content for children and when this content was screened,” he added.

“Discussions are ongoing with Icasa [the regulator for the South African communications sector], the Broadcasting Complaints Commission and other stakeholders.

“These discussions have not yet been concluded, but we are hoping that all South Africans will get involved.”
