Readers rally to save Rape Crisis centre

2007-12-20 00:00

After a recent article in The Witness that alerted the public to the serious funding constraints of LifeLine, and in particular of the Rape Crisis project, the organisation has been overwhelmed by the generous response of the public.

LifeLine director Debbie Harrison said that donations had ranged between R6,50 and R50 000. “To date, R85 812,50 has been donated with a number of promises still expected. Many of the donors have requested to remain anonymous and to them we give our grateful thanks.”

Harrison said that Rape Crisis staff in outlying hospitals had been successful in gaining full-time employment at the hospitals.

“We are delighted that the rape crisis counselling skills are now an integral part of the staff component of the crisis centres. The departmental authorities are to be affirmed for their vision … ”

She said that of significance too was the quick release of 50% of their funds that are under curatorship by Global Investment Services.

Harrison said that while they are not out of the woods yet, the donations ensure they stay open for the festive season and provide survivors of trauma, rape, hijackings and abuse with a quality counselling service.
