Rebuilding of hospitals speeded up

2010-09-28 00:00

THE deterioration of state hospitals is exacerbated by putting doctors with no engineering qualifications in charge of infrastructure projects, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said in Durban yesterday.

He was speaking at a stakeholders’consultative workshop at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, held partly to discuss the rebuilding of King Edward VIII, George Mukhari, Walter Sisulu, Chris Hani Baragwanath and Limpopo academic hospitals as flagship projects to fast-track public health infrastructure development.

The hospitals provide referral services for rural communities.

Task teams have been put in place to start working on the project, which will cost “much more than the building of World Cup stadia”.

The National Health Council, where he meets his MECs, decided that all infrastructure units must be run by engineers, Motsoaledi added.

“Government wants to use the experience gained in the building of Fifa stadiums in the implementation of these projects. The time when departments would give money to Public Works without their direct involvement in planning and design has come to an end.”
