Reclamation: Hatcheries park getting a makeover

2012-07-23 00:00

HATCHERIES Park in Chase Valley is getting a makeover, courtesy of Growing Parks, a local non-profit organisation.

The organisation is revamping the park and aims to reclaim it for the benefit of the public.

Growing Parks chairperson Fahrana Vally said the aim was to turn the park into a friendly and safe environment.

She said the park had become a dumping site, leading to devastating environmental damage, including pollution of the stream that runs through the park.

“We want to create a vibrant place where people from different backgrounds can come together and have fun,” said Vally.

Growing Parks has already started working towards its goal.

New gates have been installed, the toilets have been renovated, the swings have been fixed and a security company is providing 24-hour security. This is necessary as there have been several attacks and robberies in the park over the years.

The organisation is hoping to have the park opened to the public early next month.

Facilities to look forward to include slides, trampolines, a bicycle track, sandpits and a trail for the blind.
