Reed dance: woman in trousers barred

2010-09-07 00:00

NO woman wearing trousers will be admitted to the 26th annual Reed Dance at the weekend.

The ceremony will see thousands of young maidens, politicians, government and business dignitaries and local and overseas tourists gathering at King Goodwill Zwelithini’s Enyokeni Royal Palace in KwaNongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday and Sunday.

The KZN Arts and Culture Department has issued a warning against wearing of trousers. “Wearing of pants by female journalists and tourists is also not allowed as it is not in line with royal palace protocol,” said a statement.

The maidens, who come from all corners of the Sadec region, will present reeds to the king and perform isiZulu dances.
