JOHANNESBURG — Bidvest Wits midfielder Thando Mngomeni swiftly moved to apologise to referee Lwandile Mfike after verbally abusing the match official in an Absa Premiership match last month.

The player appeared before a PSL tribunal on Tuesday where he was fined R50 000, of which R10 000 was payable within seven days and the rest suspended for 12 months.

As part of the penalty, the player was ordered to write an apology which was to be sent to the match official and a copy of that published on his club’s website.

Mngomeni wrote: “I have no intention of justifying my behaviour, but only wish to be forgiven for my unsporting actions. I hope my apology is accepted and I promise that this behaviour will not happen again.”
