Refuge for abused women and children opens its doors in Howick

2009-06-09 00:00

THE midlands again has a much-needed facility for victims of domestic violence.

uMngeni councillors Lauren de Scally and Tim Lindsay-White cut ribbons on a symbolic representation of Howick’s Cornerstone Safe House for abused women and children at an official opening and fundraising event on Saturday. The location of the house needs to remain secret to protect its residents, so the event was held at the Methodist Church in Howick.

The safe facility can accommodate a maximum of 16 women and children for up to three months. During this time they receive counselling and other support and the women acquire practical skills to help them find employment when they leave.

The house has reopened under a new management board after it closed at the end of 2007 amid a management dispute.

The project requires funding and donations can be made directly to: First National Bank, Howick branch, account number: 62065967443. For further inquiries, contact Natalie at 033 330 5667.
