Relay for Life walk in PMB to raise funds for cancer patients

2010-06-14 00:00

RELAY for Life of Pietermaritzburg, which takes place later this year, will see local people walking to raise money for cancer patients.

“This celebration of life brings the Maritzburg community together in a unified effort to fight cancer,” said event organiser Curtis Huysamen.

The relay will take place on August 7 and 8 at Maritzburg College.

Former and current cancer patients, those who have lost loved ones, families, businesses, civic organisations and the public are invited to take part.

The event encourages communities to celebrate those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

Participants camp out at the relay site, and when they are not taking their turn walking, they can join in fun activities and enjoy local entertainment.

“Relay for Life brings the progress against cancer to the forefront,” said Huysamen.

“Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbours who have dealt with cancer themselves.

“Their involvement is proof of the progress that has reduced death rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.”

The money raised by participants goes directly to Cansa, the Cancer Association of South Africa, in Pietermaritzburg to help their life-saving programmes, said Huysamen.
