Religion: more bibles in fewer homes, fewer south africans read them

2009-08-24 00:00

MORE than 77% of the South African population may be Christian, but not all are reading their Bibles.

An Ipsos Markinor survey commissioned by The Forum of Bible Agencies in South Africa shows that over the past six years there has been a decline in the number of households that own Bibles. However, the average number of Bibles per household has increased from two in 2003 to three in 2009.

The findings indicate that there has been a significant increase in demand for three or more Bibles among Indian households (24%), black (23%) and white (six percent). The survey also found that among the younger generation there has been an increase in demand for the Bible to be made available in technologically advanced formats such as MP3, CD-Rom, cellphone and the Internet.
