Remant Alton takes buses off the road

2009-03-13 00:00

Thousands of bus commuters will be left stranded after Durban bus company Remant Alton suspended its operations due to financial woes and intimidation by workers.

Yesterday, disgruntled workers were locked out of the company’s depot in Beatrice Street. Hundreds of workers gathered outside and demanded to be let in.

Earlier this week, administration and workshop staff and other employees downed tools after 262 workers were given dismissal letters.

Some buses did not operate on their routes, leaving hundreds of people stranded in areas where no taxis run regularly.

Remant Alton chief executive officer Jay Singh said the situation worsened every day and that it has become impossible for people to plan their trips according to the bus timetables.

Ernest Nzuza of the Transport and Allied Workers’ Union said that when drivers reported for work, they found the gates to the depot locked.

Mayor Obed Mlaba apologised for the “regrettable” inconvenience. He asked commuters to be patient and use other public transport while a proper plan to restructure Durban’s transport is put in place.
