Remember — don’t fill up with fuel tonight

2008-08-04 00:00

After 11 months of ritually filling their tanks on the first Tuesday of the month before fuel price hikes, motorists can relax tonight.

The price of petrol will drop after midnight tonight for the first time since September 5, 2007.

Although the Minerals and Energy Department announced on Friday that petrol will cost 27 c less, the price will actually decrease by an effective 30 c a litre.

The price change has been rounded off because many petrol pumps cannot display a four-digit number.

Last month, the price of petrol reached the four-digit mark, taking it over R10 for the first time in Pietermaritzburg.

According to the Fuel Retailers’ Association, the average price of petrol in Pietermaritzburg will drop to R10,10 cents a litre from R10,40.

The wholesale price of 0,05% sulphur diesel — presently around R11,50 a litre — will decrease by 16c a litre while the wholesale price of 0,005% sulphur diesel will drop by 17c a litre.

Weaker global oil prices coupled with a stronger rand helped to soften fuel prices in August.

The price of illuminating paraffin will increase by four cents a litre.
