Renewed metro status bid for uMgungundlovu

2014-11-03 00:00

THE bid to have the uMgungundlovu District Municipality become a metro gained traction at the ANC’s Moses Mabhida regional conference over the weekend.

The area, which incorporates the city of Pietermaritzburg, is the third biggest region of the ANC in KZN. An estimated 450 delegates attended the conference held in Howick, which saw new leadership elected to run the region.

Super Zuma was elected chairperson; Chris Ndlela, deputy chairperson; Mzi Zuma, secretary; Maphindi Zondi, deputy secretary and Pat Jama as treasurer.

Speaking after the conference, the newly elected secretary Mzi Zuma said they had learnt from past mistakes and would formulate a stronger bid for the region to receive metro status.

“The process was previously initiated by the Msunduzi Municipality, this time around it will be initiated by the uMgungundlovu District because there is more co-ordination at that level and we will continue to monitor the process all the way,” he said.

He said the process would be more inclusive with all the smaller municipalities included.

The first salvo of the renewed bid for metro status was fired by former ANC regional chairperson, Alpha Shelembe, when delivering his political report on Saturday: “Forget about 2016, that [opportunity] is already gone. We should focus on 2021 … Richards bay could become a metro before we do.”
