Rescue: ‘Bobbing’ man not found

2007-12-18 00:00

The National Sea Rescue Institue (NSRI) launched its Vodacom rescue helicopter yesterday afternoon in response to a report of a man reportedly seen "bobbing about" in apparent difficulty in the surf off Durban’s Laguna beach.

However, NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said there was no sign of the man and the matter has been handed over to the SAPS.

The head of Durban’s Search and Rescue unit, Captain Troy Allison, said the unit were investigating, but had no reliable information as there were no eye witnesses or relatives present at the scene and no missing person’s report was filed. "The report we received third or fourth hand was that the head of this person was seen in the water, and then disappeared."

He said all reports like this are taken seriously, but sometimes people mistake training buoys used by life guards for people. "Obviously I can’t say that’s what happened in this case," he added.
