Resident shocked at R660?000 electricity bill for November

2012-12-18 00:00

IVAN Francis’ heart almost stopped when his residential utility bill showed he owed R660 000 for the month of November.

“The electricity bill is more expensive than the house I live in,” said Francis.

“I live in a residential area and this was my account for one month. This is a shocker.”

He said the shock had damped his festive spirit.

Said Francis: “I think they thought that I was the one that pays for the entire area that I reside in, which is the Fitzsimmons Road area, known as the Village.”

He said he phoned in his meter readings every month and he guessed that the person capturing the readings had left out a digit when capturing them on the billing system.

“The staff do not repeat the readings back to the caller; they simply thank you. Now I need to take time off from work to sort out the municipality’s problem, which they get paid for, and my time would be wasted.”

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said: “Clearly there is something wrong with the bill. Mr Francis will get an answer if he asks from the municipality and not elsewhere [meaning the media],” he said.

He said Francis should go to Room 129 on the first floor of the A.S. Chetty Centre municipal offices for assistance.
