Residents driven crazy over unheeded calls to repair roads

2012-11-30 00:00

RESIDENTS in Hibiscus Coast are being driven up the wall with repeated failures by authorities to repair potholes.

Appeals in various newspapers to officials in Hibiscus Coast Municipality and the province appear to be falling on deaf ears.

On November 15, it was reported how, in one weekend, a single pothole in Marine Drive, near the old MacDonald’s Farm, shredded the tyres of at least 12 cars.

Since then the situation has not changed, despite some work having started on Marine Drive. At least 30 cars have been damaged this week.

Avesh Anwanth of Av’s Auto told a community title yesterday that he personally towed 16 cars over the weekend, knew of 23 cars that were helped by his colleagues, and had helped another eight stranded motorists fix tyres.

When The Witness photographer went to the scene yesterday, a big pothole responsible for much of the damage had not yet been filled, although workers were on the scene further down the road.

The road belongs to the national Transport Department and when provincial roads manager Sibongile Somi was contacted for a comment, she said: “We are doing our best in the rain. We have two teams working and are trying to fix it as soon as possible.”
