Residents laud speedy response after transformer bursts into flames

2014-09-16 00:00

MOUNTAIN Rise residents were shocked when a transformer at the corner of Royston and Tucker Roads exploded and burst into flames yesterday, leaving parts of the suburb without electricity.

A resident said there had been “quite a loud” explosion.

Fortunately, no cars were passing by and there were no pedestrians in the vicinity when it happened.

When The Witness visited the scene, flames could still be seen inside the transformer.

While some residents were concerned about when the electricity would be restored, others said they were pleasantly surprised by the excellent services rendered by both the fire and electricity departments, which had responded quickly to the situation.

“Within 15 minutes of their arrival, they managed to put out the flames and power was restored,” said a resident.

A fire department staff member said the explosion may have resulted from an electrical fault, but an investigation would be carried out to ascertain the cause.

Attempts to get comment from the Msunduzi Municipality yesterday were unsuccessful at the time of going to press.
