Return address changed after 10 years of effort

A HAYFIELD resident spent 10 years trying in vain to get Msunduzi Municipality to change a postal address. He must be commended for perseverance.

The resident (let’s call him Steve) had been receiving a municipal utility bill for the domestic worker employed by the previous owner of his property. The bill was for a house in Glenwood.

Being a civic-minded citizen, Steve called the municipality and informed it that the recipient was no longer at the address recorded on the envelope — a simple enough issue to solve.

“Herein lies the problem,” said Steve. “For 10 years we have contacted the municipality by telephone, written letters and e-mails informing them of the error.

“We have marked the envelope as “Return to sender, recipient not at this address”, only to have the self-same envelope delivered back to us the following week.”

The Witness called Vinay Maharaj in the municipal billing section, who said he could change the address, but would need the account number.

Steve opened one of the return-to-sender accounts, got the number and this was sent to Maharaj. Keep your fingers crossed that this is the end of this 10-year chronicle.

I made a few experimental calls to the call centre and can share the good news that it is working. There may be problems getting through when there is a power outage or water cut, but generally it is functional. When you lodge a complaint, don’t forget to get a reference number. This will help you track the progress of your complaint, and if nothing happens, you have proof that you did lodge it.
