Reunion buzz as clubs end hockey season

2014-09-05 00:00

HOCKEY circles in the KZN capital and further afield are abuzz with news of a reunion.

Past and present Pietermaritzburg women’s players, coaches, managers and administrators from 1960 to 2000 will meet for what is set to be a memorable evening celebrating women’s hockey in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, September 27, at the Maritzburg Canoe Club, Camps Drift.

The organisers have managed to contact 100 people in PMB, the Midlands and further afield, while prominent hockey personalities from the far-flung regions of South Africa and overseas are making plans for the trip.

Given the span of 40 years, it has been impossible to establish the whereabouts of everyone and the organisers have appealed to anyone who hasn’t been contacted — or people who may know where certain people are now living — to contact either Flick Edwards at 082 855 3694 on by e-mail on

brianetd@gmail.com; Janet Edwards at 082 807 5100 or by e-mail on edwardsj@futurenet.co.za; or Muxsie Mayne on 083 453 7633 or on muxsie@barmatek.co.za.

There will be a display of PMB and midlands women’s hockey memorabilia, so if anyone who has old photographs, badges, uniforms or newspaper cuttings is asked to contact Janet Edwards.

The dress for the event is smart casual. No entry fee will be charged, snacks will be served, and a cash bar will be available.

Howton the favourites

Meanwhile, the last day of the KZN Inland premier division club hockey season is going down to the wire on Sunday at Greenfields Turf, opposite Harry Gwala Stadium.

The favourites Howton will play giant-killers Country Districts’ second side in the final of the Inland Challenge.

The Country Districts’ ladies’ team face Varsity firsts in the showdown women’s league match.

The day will see Inland Challenge play-off matches from 8.30 am, with the women’s decider at 11.30 am and the men’s title match at 2.30pm.

Organisers anticipate a festive atmosphere, as all the sides draw the curtain on another entertaining season.
