Revive spirit of 1956, women told

THE streets on Ngwelezane were alive with colour during a celebration of Africa Women’s Day and Women’s Month on Saturday.

Held at Phesheya sports ground, the event was also expected to be used as a platform to congratulate new African Union Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Dlamini-Zuma chose instead to attend a mass funeral of the seven children who were killed in a car accident in Bulwer, her home town.

Weziwe Thusi, the MEC for Social Development, apologised on behalf of Dlamini-Zuma.

She reminded the women who were at the event to be like the women of 1956 who had put their differences aside and taken a stand to fought for what they knew was better. On August 9, 1956, 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings, Pretoria in protest against the apartheid government’s pass laws.

“Let us be like those women so that the future generation will learn something from us,”said Thusi.

The MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Meshack Hadebe, said Dlamini-Zuma had made everyone proud and that the event was a tribute to her.

“Dlamini-Zuma is a woman of integrity. We are proud of her and know that she will do a great job,” he said.
