POLICE are offering a reward of up to R15 000 for any information on the whereabouts of a suspect who stabbed a woman to death near the cathedral in the Pietermaritzburg CBD in 2010.

The incident took place on Friday, October 8, 2010 when Nomcebo Happiness Mvelase (29) was repeatedly stabbed while walking in the Pietermaritzburg CBD at around 3.30 pm.

According to police, Mvelase was walking along Cathedral Lane with her six-year-old son. They were approached by an unknown man who allegedly pulled out a knife. He stabbed Mvelase on her face and chest, seriously wounding her.

It is believed her son ran to the nearby church and reported the incident to church members, who called the police. Mvelase died a short while later.

Her cellphone, gold chains, rings and handbag containing R2 000 in cash were not taken from her. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

Anyone who has information on the whereabouts of the suspect is encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Thembinkosi Mthalane of the SAPS Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit on 033 845 8502 or 082 556 1482.

Those who have information, but want to remain anonymous, can contact Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.

All information will be treated with the strictest confidence and informants’ identities will not be disclosed.
