Rhinos: U.S. siblings launch campaign

2013-05-13 00:00

THE rhino poaching crisis in South Africa has caught the attention of two young animal rights activists from the United States, Olivia (10) and Carter Ries (12).

The brother and sister are founders of the One More Generation (OMG) non-profit organisation that aims to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species around the world.

OMG started in 2009 and has been involved in animal conservation initiatives ever since. It turned their attention to the rhinos in 2011.

With two South African NGOs, OMG launched a rhino letter writing campaign aimed at bringing an educational outreach programme to communities around the world and teaching them the importance of saving the species.

The two set out to collect 1 000 letters from around the world, which they plan to deliver personally to President Jacob Zuma to convince him to do something about the rhino poaching in South Africa.

They managed to collect 2 600 letters from all over the world and more are coming in. They have officially asked for a meeting with Zuma and await his response. South African Airways has agreed to fly the two to South Africa from their home in Atlanta, Georgia, for the meeting as soon as a date is confirmed.
