Richards’s hat-trick hurts Titans

2014-10-06 00:00

A SENSATIONAL hat-trick by The Unlimited Titans swing bowler Rowan Richards and an extraordinary lower-order collapse by the Chevrolet Warriors saw the Titans win their Sunfoil Series clash by 170 runs at Sahara Willowmoore Park in Benoni yesterday.

The Warriors had 225 for four in the 89th over shortly after tea, but lost their final six wickets for the addition of 19 runs in 14.3 overs as Richards captured five for 33 in 14.4 overs. He swung the ball both ways at pace and had the lower order at sixes and sevens.

In his dramatic 15th over, Richards achieved the hat-trick by bowling from around the wicket and swinging it away from the left-hander Athenkosi Dyili, which forced the edge to third slip. Roelof van der Merwe completed it.

Sisanda Magala was bowled next delivery by a ball that straightened, and he was gone for a duck.

Basheer Walters became Richards’s third victim when he edged another delivery that straightened to Van der Merwe at third slip.

The Warriors would have felt aggrieved that the stoic defensive work by Colin Ingram was not supported by the lower order.

Ingram led from the front in the first innings by scoring 111. His charge for a second consecutive ton was halted by Richards, but he fought valiantly in facing 226 balls and hitting 16 fours.

The Titans secured 10 bonus points for their superb win.
