Ringleaders of car-breaking syndicate nabbed by cops

2014-03-19 00:00

FOUR men believed to have been ringleaders of a car-breaking syndicate were arrested by the SAPS Westville Crime Prevention members yesterday.

The four suspects were nabbed while the officers were patrolling in the Westville Central area when they spotted a blue VW Polo Classic with four male occupants.

“The SAPS members drew closer to observe the vehicle and noticed all the occupants were trying not to look at them. The members decided to stop and search the car,” police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

While the police were searching, they found a large quantity of items related to motor vehicle theft and theft out of motor vehicles.

Police found a monkey wrench, four cellphones, a digital camera, seven sets of car keys and other car breaking implements.

“It is suspected the car keys are used to override victims’ alarms when parking. Electronic equipment will be examined by experts to establish what they contain and what purpose they are used for,” Naicker said.

The four suspects are due to appear in court soon.
