Riverside’s midfield trio impress Juventus FC

WHILE the Comrades Marathon dominated sport headlines this past weekend, matches in the Durban Central Football Association (DCFA) produced exciting contests, supported by vocal and supportive crowds.

First up was the clash between Riverside FC and Juventus FC at Riverside Sports, where the hosts were keen to put the brakes on the Italians and prevent them surging too far ahead in the league.

As log leaders, Juventus had no intention of settling for anything but a win and the final score of 1-1 would have left them slightly disappointed.

Both teams were led onto the field by junior players from each club, a moment to be remembered by the youngsters. The encounter started with both sides jabbing for supremacy, keen tackles and challenges an indication of the mood in both sides.

Juventus created the first chance of the afternoon, Nicola Acampora’s corner headed strongly toward goal by Simon Magee, the effort denied with a magnificent save by Riverside’s new signing, Russell Thompson.

In the 13th minute, Juventus struck when Byron Alberts, having found space down the left, smashed a screamer into the net, a superb effort appreciated by the crowd.

Keeping their composure, Riverside bounced back in the 25th minute when top scorer Gilly Kamango headed home Mikko van Breemen’s corner at the near post, having the sides level at the break.

No side could bag a winner in the second half and while Juventus skipper Devon Lane looked good, it was Riverside’s midfield trio of Donovan Wilson, Van Breemen and Jared Chelin who gave the hosts momentum and ascendancy, allowing Sandile Msomi to enjoy some constructive forays down the right.

Juventus’ only hope was relying on the counter-attack and it was only resolute defence that kept the teams level and ensured the Italians remained undefeated at the top of the log with 23 points from nine matches.

Coronation is second on 19 points, followed by Albert Park 18 points, Newlands 16 points and Sando 15 points. Stars hold up the table with 3 points.

In the DCFA Divison 1, Sydenham Heights and Sydenham Sporting met in an electrifying derby, which Sydenham Heights won 2-1.

Heights scored first when in-form striker Davonne Fisher’s clinical effort found the net, but Sporting equalised before the break, giving no side the initiative.

Keeping their composure, Heights struck what was the winner when Jonathan Noel beat a defender on the right and delivered a brilliant cross for Fisher to head goalwards.

The win gave Heights the impressive record of nine wins from nine matches, with 43 goals scored and top spot on the log with 27 points.

As for Fisher, his tally of goals is 15 from nine matches.
