Riveting second day in Inland and Coastal clash

2014-11-29 00:00

THE second day of the Sunfoil Three-Day Cup match between KZN Inland and KZN Coastal at the Pietermaritzburg Oval was as riveting as the first, such was the keenness of the contest in this provincial derby, allied with a pitch that offered something to batsman and bowler.

While 19 poles were snapped up on day one for 280 runs, 12 sticks were claimed at a price of 273 runs yesterday as the bowlers still held sway. KZN Coastal need 206 more runs to win today with nine wickets still on hand.

Bad light left 28 overs on the table yesterday to add to the 15 not delivered on Thursday, and with cloud cover and occasional showers forecast today, more overs are likely to be lost, but there should be enough cricket to determine an outright result.

Coastal won the morning session yesterday with Daryn Dupavillon (25) and Rabian Engelbrecht putting on 40 for the last wicket to take the Durban side from an overnight 83 for nine to 123 all out, this in response to Inland’s first innings 197.

Inland added to their 74-run lead on the first innings with 167 all out in the second to leave Coastal with a challenging target of 242 to win. But it could have been more had the home side not stuttered from a handy 68 for one to 69 for four.

In the performance of the day, Inland number five Suhail Razak (47*) played a superb innings under serious pressure from the menacing pace of Dupavillon and impressive spin duo Thandi Tshabalala (3-36 in 16) and Daryn Smit (3-18 in 10).

Matt Pillans got the crucial wicket of explosive opener Cameron Delport (11) in Coastal’s second innings and the Durbanites will resume at 36 for one. The visitors still have plenty of batting in the likes of skipper Divan van Wyk (22*), Smit and Greg Oldfield.

Inland seam and swing bowler Graham Hume, who destroyed the Coastal backbone on day one with the dismissals of Delport, Smit and Oldfield in seven balls, could be a big factor today, while the spinners may also play a big role.

Tomorrow’s T20 match starts at 11 am.
