Rivlife launches city bakery to make bread for the poor

2009-10-16 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG non-profit organisation Rivlife is going to launch a new bakery, the Rivlife Community Bakery, which will supply poor communities with cheap bread. It is expected to start operating at the end of October.

The bakery will supply bread to areas such as Cinderella Park, Glenwood and Eastwood.

“The facility will create jobs and supply daily bread at a fair price to the communities,” said Rivlife executive manager Mirolyn Naidoo. She said that with the help of USAID and Baker’s Mate, which supplied the equipment, they are busy training their staff.

Naidoo said the project will also raise funds for RivLife’s other projects. “Those who suffer the most, especially during this period of global recession, are the poor. Through the establishment of a community bakery, Rivlife wants to provide nutritious bread at a fair price and also ensure sustainability of our … projects.”
