Road restrictions for Durban service

2013-12-12 00:00

WITH thousands of people around KwaZulu-Natal set to descend on Durban to pay their tribute to former Nelson Mandela at the weekend, severe traffic congestion in and around Moses Mabhida Stadium is expected.

Around 1 000 buses and taxis are expected to transport people from across the province and an additional 14 trains are also expected to ferry people to the city to honour Mandela in a provincial memorial service.

More than 70 000 people are expected to attend the memorial service tomorrow. Traffic congestion is likely to start in the morning as metro police temporarily close or restrict traffic at a number of roads.

eThekwini municipality spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said the closures and restrictions will have an impact on traffic flow. He said motorists should plan their trips accordingly.

Traffic will be restricted as from 5 am to 7 pm on the following roads:

• Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue between Somtseu Road to Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road;

• Isaiah Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road from Twin Clothing to Natal Mounted Rifles/ Durban Country Club entrance (allowing access to Twin Clothing off Umgeni Road and NMR/DCC off M4 only);

• Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road on-ramp to Masabalala Yengwa north-bound;

• Jaco Jackson will be closed at Masabalala Yengwa (access to the rugby stadium and Berea Rovers will be via Smiso Nkwanyana Road);

• Battery Beach Road will be closed at the entrance to the swimming pools and Mustering Field; and

• Sandile Thusi between Stalwart Simelane (Stanger) Street and Sylvester Ntuli (Brickhill) Road.
