Road toll: KZN ‘red spots’ named

2011-10-21 00:00

THE KZN Transport Department has identified accident “red spots” and established a Red Spot Response Team to intensify law enforcement in these areas in an attempt to reduce road deaths.

This was announced to the province’s cabinet on Wednesday after the head of the department, Chris Hlabisa, tabled the shocking road death statistics. He said a number of routes have been identified as red spots, including the N3 at Estcourt, N2 at Mkhuze, N2 at Pongola, P38 at Dannhauser, R617 Franklin/Swartberg, N2 at Mandini and N2 at Maposa.

“Between April 1 and October 17 this year, a total of 1 310 people were killed in 732 accidents,” said Hlabisa.

Among the proposed interventions is a plan to stop and check 170 000 vehicles per month.

The department has established an integrated traffic law enforcement committee to obtain legal opinion on the reduction of the speed limit from 120 to 100 km/h and 80 km/h per hour for heavy duty motor vehicles, as proposed by the national transport department.

He said the province is spending millions of rands in the aftermath of the accidents, and that the Road Accident Fund is also affected.
