Roads closed: Marathon Runners get right of way in the City

ROADS in the city will be closed tomorrow for the Weekend Witness Maritzburg Marathon.

The assembly point is Bulwer Street outside Merchiston School, with the start outside Longmarket School.

Between 3.30 am and 5.15 am Bulwer Street will be closed at the Boshoff Street and Braid Street intersections. Millar Street and Geere Street will be closed.

At 4.30 am, Boshoff Street from the bottom of Aberfeldy Road to Prince Alfred Street will be closed so that the start can be walked forward to the line for the start at 5 am.

Wheelchair athletes will begin at 4.50 am.

The race goes straight down Bulwer Street, left into Masukwane (East) Street and then left into Jabu Ndlovu.

The second lap will not include this loop but pass through Bulwer Street/Geere Street and the right hand lane of Chief Albert Luthuli and right into Prince Alfred Street.

Competitors run to Retief Street, turn left and then left again into Jabu Ndlovu Street. At West Street, they will turn left to cross the Msunduzi River and then up College Road to Alexandra Road.

At the intersection of College and Alexandra it is right into Alexandra Road, then left into Oribi Road and right into Ridge Road and across Alan Paton Avenue. At Fairfield Avenue they turn right, then left into Blackburrow Road and then left into Hesketh Drive.

At the traffic circle, they turn left into New England Road and cross the N3. At Bulwer Street they will turn left and at Surrey Road the athletes bear right. Once across the Duzi turn left at Bulwer Street.

The 10 km start will be staged in Prince Alfred Street, between Braid Street and Boshoff Street at 9 am. The runners and walkers will progress to Boshoff Street where they turn left and go to Jabu Ndlovu Street where they turn left and then left again into Chief Albert Luthuli Street.

They cross the river and turn left into Ridge Road, where they will turn left and join the marathon route until the finish.

Spectator zones will be encouraged at Maritzburg College; in the park at the intersection of Emmet Crescent and Alexandra Road Extension; at the intersection of Oribi and Ridge roads.

Marshals will be in place by 4.30 am until the seconding tables have been cleared away from the roadsides at no later than 11 am.
