Roars give away royal visitors

NELSPRUIT — Residents on the Claremont small holdings outside Nelspruit were this weekend visited by more than just the Easter Bunny.

Residents said they heard lions roar and some farmers said they saw the tawny cats three times in the bushes since Tuesday.

One of the residents, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she heard the lions roar, but pointed out that the big felines were not really a bother.

“The lions are not bothering anyone and we don’t really want the publicity, because we worry that a bunch of trigger-happy people will come to hunt the lions,” she said.

Spokesperson for the Kruger Park, Ike Phaahla, said the lions would not have walked from the Kruger, which is some 60 kilometres away, because they are too territorial.

He said there were many other game reserves in the area from where the lions could have escaped.

Louw Steyn, manager of the the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Board’s hunting and development unit, said staff yesterday went to Claremont after receiving reports about lions on the loose in the area.

“We could however not find any sign of the lions. At this stage we cannot confirm if there are any lions, but if there are, we will capture and relocate them,” Steyn said.

He said thick bushes in the area made it difficult to search.
