Robbers use ‘tile delivery’ disguise

2009-03-18 00:00

A gang of five men on Tuesday held up a domestic worker at Ashburton and robbed the home of her employers, gaining entry under the guise of being delivery men.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said domestic worker Lungile Ngubane (27) was alone at the house at Green Point Road, doing her daily chores, when she heard a car hooting at the front gate.

“Ngubane went to investigate and noticed an unknown vehicle, orange in colour, parked at the front gate. An unknown man was standing at the gate.”

The man said he was delivering tiles. Ngubane told him she did not know about any delivery and said her employer would have confirmed the arrangements with her.

The man asked Ngubane for her employer’s cellphone number, which she gave to him. He then pretended to call the employer and told Ngubane that the arrangements had been made to deliver the tiles. She then opened the gate.

“Five men immediately alighted from the vehicle. One produced a knife and held it against Ngubane’s neck,” said Jeevan.

After forcing her into the house, they tied her up on one of the beds and ransacked the house for electrical goods.

Ngubane managed to free herself a short while later and activated the panic button. Jeevan said no call was made to the employer by the robbers.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Inspector George Nieuwenhuizen of the Alexandra Road detective service at 033 845 7716 or 072 591 1975 or the anonymous Crime Stop line at 08600 10111.
