Rock hits car, motorist escapes with scratch

2012-11-07 00:00

ASHBURTON motorist Winton Long escaped with a scratch on the arm when a brick was thrown at his vehicle while driving on the N3 near the Northdale turn-off on Monday early evening.

Long said he was driving in the northbound lane at about 7.30 pm when the incident happened.

“Near the Northdale turn-off, as the road narrowed I heard this loud bang.

“The rock shattered the windshield of the car and hit me on the shoulder, landing in the back of the car.

“There were no other cars or trucks, an indication that the brick was thrown from the side of the road,” said Long.

He decided to drive straight to the Liberty Midlands Mall off-ramp and to the garage in the area. He believes that if he had stopped to examine the damage, whoever threw the brick would have hijacked or robbed him.

“At the garage I phoned the police and they were quick to respond,” he added.

“They examined my car and arm and I explained what had happened.

“They said I could wait for other police officers while they rushed to the area of the incident to investigate, or I could go to the nearest police station if I wanted to.

“A short while after they left, I received a call from a police station informing me that more police were coming, but they would be delayed as they had to attend to another call,” said Long.

He decided to go to the Townhill police station to make a statement.

“I didn’t open a criminal charge. Had I done that, it would be a criminal charge against whom? Motorists should be careful when something of this nature happens.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan warned motorists to be attentive when driving through the Chota Motala N3 construction site at night.

“Motorists are advised to approach the area with caution and to report any suspicious persons immediately. We are on the alert and regular patrols will be held in the area,” said Jeevan.
