Rolled car: man killed, three children uninjured in accident

2011-03-19 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man in his 30s was killed when his car rolled in Alan Paton Avenue yesterday afternoon.

Three children aged between six and 10 who were in the car escaped without injury.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said a witness to the accident said the vehicle may have struck the kerb, then swerved and rolled. The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

She said paramedics on their way to another accident on the N3 came across the rolled car. The driver was already dead.

She said the two girls and a boy were “a bit shaken but fortunately uninjured”, and were left in the care of the police at the scene while waiting for their families to collect them.

Some hours after the accident, a reader called to say police were still waiting for the man’s body to be collected by the state mortuary. The Health Department, which runs the mortuary, said at the time the van was on its way, but did not explain the delay.

In the accident on the N3 near the Market Road exit, 11 people sustained minor to moderate injuries when their taxi rolled.
