Royal Show calf suffers cruel attack

2009-05-26 00:00

A YOUNG calf was the victim of a vicious attack at the Royal Show on Sunday night.

“According to the handlers, they found a pool of blood behind the calf when they arrived this morning,” said the manager of Van’s Farms, Trevor Bauer. “It seems as though someone had put a piece of wire or a bicycle spoke in the female calf’s genitals.” he added.

Bauer said the mother was breed champion last year and has been entered again this year. He believes the calf, which is four-and-a-half months old, may not be alive by then.

A charge of malicious damage to property would be laid, he added.

SPCA spokeswoman Maureen Vida said: “We are appalled and strongly condemn the malicious and deliberate act of cruelty against a defenceless animal ... should the person responsible be identified, we will not hesitate to prosecute … ”

Royal Show general manager Terry Strachan said his security staff will help the farmer investigate the matter,

On Saturday night, vandals trashed a décor stand, defecting and urinating on the exhibits.

Despite these malicious acts, Strachan said, security at the show will not be stepped up.
