Royal Show ends with record attendance

2012-06-04 00:00

THE Royal Show ended on a high yesterday with at least 22 000 people said to have attended the Ukhozi FM music concert on the closing day.

Terry Strachan, the MD of the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal, told The Witness last night that this year’s event had taken another leap forward with more people attending.

He said accurate figures would be available today.

“All indications are that we have done very well this year. Our numbers continue to climb year on year.

The figures ending on Saturday’s show indicate that the number of people attending the event had increased by 6 000, that is excluding the number of people who visited on Sunday and for the Ukhozi FM concert.”

The event attracted communities from far and wide. He said this was largely through their advertising.

They spent about R1 million on advertising and publicity created by the show’s media partners.

The total number of people visiting until Saturday was 145 000.

Strachan said the society had added new dimensions to keep the event interesting.

“We did not want the event to feel repetitive.”

He said the society had added a hall for special occasions, which provided information about special days in peoples’ lives, such as birthdays and weddings.

It had also put up an exhibit to educate show-goers about the importance of seeds.

Strachan said he believed the businesspeople had done very well.

He said that during his walkabout with his staff, they had been informed by the vendors that they had done very well.

“We are still going to send our questionnaire to record the level of satisfaction and normally we receive around a 60% response, which is also an indication of the success of the event.

“That questionnaire will tell us about their satisfaction.”

Strachan said there were no security incidents reported yesterday, compared to previously years which saw reports of stolen phones and laptops.
