Royal family spending criticised

2009-10-19 00:00

STRINGENT financial measures will be imposed on the Royal Household Department to ensure that it adheres to Provincial Finance Management Act and curbs runaway expenditure that has characterised the department.

The chairwoman of the provincial finance portfolio committee, Belinda Scott, said the pattern of overspending in the royal household seems to be done deliberately.

Tabling the committee’s resolutions in September about the royal household, Scott said that the committee has passed resolutions on numerous occasions for the department to curtail costs, but the resolutions have gone unheeded.

Scott said the former head of department, Vusi Shongwe, was arrogant in effecting resolutions.

She added that the royal household has once again been allowed to overspend by officials tasked with monitoring the department’s finances.

Shongwe, said Scott, allowed an overexpenditure of R3 million and now the royal household has been allowed to overspend by R8 million.

Scott also questioned whether the members of the legislature need the “huge amounts” of food they are served at legislature sittings, given all the hungry families in the province.

“We need to get all departments across the board to comply with cutting spending on unnecessary things,” said Scott.
